Overview

FollowUp is a native macOS app for Apple silicon Macs that creates a private queue of unanswered Apple Messages and Gmail conversations. FollowUp is designed around local storage and on-device processing. We do not operate a cloud inbox or an inference server for your message content.

Google data FollowUp accesses

If you choose to connect Gmail, FollowUp requests the Google OAuth scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.readonly. This allows the app to read Gmail messages, threads, associated metadata, and the email address of the connected account so it can identify conversations that may need a reply or action.

This permission does not allow FollowUp to send email, archive or delete messages, change labels, or mark messages as read. Gmail access is optional and begins only after you grant permission through Google's authorization screen.

How Google data is used

FollowUp retrieves recent Gmail conversations directly from Google when you initiate a refresh. The selected model, when installed, reviews that content locally on your Mac to create the follow-up queue and suggested drafts. If you explicitly choose lower-accuracy Basic Mode, deterministic on-device rules perform the review instead. Gmail content is not transmitted to FollowUp-operated servers or to a third-party AI service.

FollowUp's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Local storage and security

• Google OAuth access and refresh tokens are stored in macOS Keychain and marked for use on that Mac.
• Gmail and Messages queue snapshots are cached in ~/Library/Application Support/FollowUp.
• FollowUp offers a recommended 2.50 GB Qwen3 4B model and a larger 5.03 GB Qwen3 8B model intended for Macs with at least 16 GB of memory.
• The selected model file is downloaded over HTTPS, verified before installation, and then runs on the Mac without an internet inference service.
• The model download request contains no Messages, Gmail, Contacts, queue, or draft content.
• FollowUp checks this website once per day for software updates. The request may include the installed app version and standard web request metadata, but system profiling is disabled and no conversation, Contacts, queue, draft, or OAuth data is included.
• FollowUp does not sell Google user data or use it for advertising.

The app necessarily communicates with Google's APIs to retrieve Gmail data and complete OAuth. Apart from those Google services, Gmail content stays on the Mac and is not sent to infrastructure operated by FollowUp.

Messages and Contacts

With user-granted macOS permissions, FollowUp reads the local Messages database and may use Contacts to replace phone numbers with names. This information is processed locally and is not transmitted to FollowUp-operated servers. Contacts access is required to use FollowUp so the app can identify people and filter unknown senders.

Feedback you choose to send

If you use Send Feedback, FollowUp transmits the text you enter, an optional contact email, and—only when enabled—technical details such as app and macOS versions, the selected model, permission states, refresh state, and aggregate queue counts. FollowUp does not automatically attach message text, drafts, contact names, account addresses, OAuth tokens, or passwords. Feedback is stored in a private support database and private issue tracker while it is needed to investigate, test, and communicate a resolution.

Anonymous download and installation counts

The Download button on this website records one download event containing the release version and time. When FollowUp first launches successfully, it sends one event containing a random retry identifier, the app version and build number, and the platform name macos. The random identifier prevents a failed request from being counted twice; it is not reused for updates, feedback, Gmail, or Messages.

These records do not contain a name, email address, stable device or user identifier, Messages or Gmail content, Contacts, queue data, model choice, OAuth data, or feedback. FollowUp's product database does not store an IP address or user agent with these events. Standard request metadata may be processed temporarily by the website hosting provider for security and delivery. Installation counts are approximate because reinstalling FollowUp or deleting its preferences can create another first-launch event.

Retention, disconnection, and deletion

Local snapshots remain on the Mac until they are replaced by a later refresh or deleted by the user. Disconnecting Gmail in FollowUp deletes the app's stored Google OAuth tokens from macOS Keychain and prevents further Gmail access. It does not delete the local queue cache.

To remove both authorization and locally cached data at once, open Privacy in the app and choose Delete Local Data…. The complete data deletion instructions also cover manual removal if the app cannot be opened. Delete Local Data preserves Local AI model artifacts, including an installed model or partial downloads, so a completed download does not need to be repeated; the selected model can be removed separately from Accounts without removing alternate packs. Because FollowUp does not store Gmail content or OAuth tokens on its own servers, there is no server-side copy to request that we erase.

Sharing and disclosure

FollowUp does not share, sell, rent, or disclose Gmail content for advertising, analytics, or data-broker purposes. We may disclose information only if required by law; in the normal product architecture, we do not possess your locally stored Gmail content.
